The Husqvarna 128DJx was at the higher end of my budget when I was looking around for a new gas powered trimmer, but with all its additional features, I felt that it would be a food investment.  I have owned a different model of Husqvarna trimmer in the past.  I trust this company to deliver professional standards of DIY power tools and I know that tools that I have previously bought from them have been the best in quality.

The Husqvarna 128DJx features the usual string trimmer that you would expect.  It has a good robust design that is easy to handle, and simple to use.  Not only this though, but the Husqvarna 128DJx allows you to also cut your grass as you would with a normal lawn mower.  I like this feature because I have fairly uneven land in my garden, and so using a lawnmower isn’t ideal.  The Husqvarna 128DJx 17-Inch 28cc 2-Stroke Gas Powered Straight Shaft String Trimmer/Brush Cutter with Detachable Shaft just glides over grass and cuts smoothly, rather than simply tearing it out by the root like some trimmers would do.
Storing the Husqvarna is really simple because the shaft is easy to remove.  I am able to fit it into a small corner of my shed and it is not in the way.

When you use most of the trimmers you will find that even if they are not heavy, the rotation of the motor will cause the trimmer to vibrate in your hands.  This can make your grip unsteady and even numb the sensation in your fingers, which can cause you to drop the trimmer.  That is very dangerous, especially if you lose control of the trimmer whilst you are squeezing the trigger to power it.  It only takes a second to do some very harmful damage.  The Husqvarna 128DJx doesn’t have this safety issue, as the rotary motor is far more efficient and it ensures that the impact of the motor rotating is used to power the trimmer, rather than just being absorbed back into the trimmer handle.

I like that the Husqvarna 128DJx is powered by gas because it means that I can use the trimmer whenever I want, and wherever in my garden that I choose to.  I don’t have to worry about where the cord is, or whether my battery has been charged ready for use.

With the additional features that make this trimmer so much more useful than the other trimmers in its price range, and with the additional safety features, I think it is a great choice if you are able to afford it.  The trimmer is easy to assemble, use and is powerful enough for any job.

After owning several corded string trimmers, and managing to cut through the cord multiple times on each one, I decided that I’d had enough of constantly having to rejoin the cables together, and not to mention wasting the trimmer string that ends up wrapped around the cord as it severs.  I purchased the Black & Decker NST2118 and was pleasantly surprised at my good choice in string trimmer.

I have quite a large area of grass that I need to trim, and as I live in quite a damp area, I find that I constantly have to cut the grass.  My main concern about the Black & Decker NST2118 is that it is a cordless model of string trimmer.  I have owned power tools in the past that have been battery powered and been tremendously disappointed.  Usually I find that the trimmers are nowhere near as powerful as the corded version and that 20 minutes into the job, I have to down tools and put the battery on charge.  Over time the battery powered devices that I’ve previously owned have stopped holding the charge, and I am lucky if I get even 5 minute’s use out of them.  With the Black & Decker NST2118, I was happy to find that the battery lasts for about 45 minutes when I am constantly using the string trimmer and it doesn’t take very long to charge either.  The battery is powerful enough even to perform edging on solidified mud; so again, there are no complaints there.  Even if the battery does run out halfway through a job, it’s not the end of the world because there is a second battery.  I usually charge one whilst I use the other and then swap them around just to conserve the batteries life and to spread out the wear and tear.
The one thing that I did have an issue with is the trimmer overheating.  After about 20 minutes of high intensity trimming of my rose beds and other such things with thicker stalks, the Black & Decker NST2118 just ticks itself off, and I have to leave it for about 10 minutes whilst it cools down.  I guess that’s expected of a trimmer when it has been in use for this long, but still, that’s one annoyance that I have about it.

The Black & Decker NST2118 trimmer is really easy to use.  To power it, there’s just a trigger to pull and the trimmer just starts itself.  When the string has worn down, there’s a simple mechanism that automatically extends the string back out again which I feel quite safe about.  I like the fact that the trimmer isn’t very heavy – only about 6.5lb and so it can be carried around the garden without getting too worn out.

The Black & Decker GH1000 is a powerful trimmer.  I own one, but I wouldn’t particularly recommend it if you have a family with small children, or if you are generally accident-prone.  The trimmer is so powerful that it can cause a lot of damage.

Before purchasing the Black & Decker GH1000 timmer, I had a relatively basic corded trimmer.  It did the job, but it took about 2 or 3 hours to trim my lawn.  I had had enough of having such a powerless trimmer, so I read one or two reviews online and decided to give the Black & Decker GH1000 a try.

After using the Black & Decker GH1000, I was a little alarmed to find that many of the parts started to fail within the first few uses.  I had to take the cover off the motor to free a little of the trimming string which had become lodged in between the cover and the rest of the trimmer.  The first thing I noticed was that there was a screw missing from the cover.  I figured that it might have dropped out when I was trimming.  When I took the cover off, I noticed that the rubber band inside the cover that turns the string spindle has begun to warp and looked a little out of shape.  I wasn’t too sure though, so I just freed the string and put the cover back.  A few weeks later, I was using the string trimmer again and it just cut out after about 15 minutes.  I took the cover off after the trimmer still wouldn’t turn on after an hour and I saw that the rubber band had completely split.  I ended up taking that one back to the store where I had bought it and promptly got a replacement.

The replacement wasn’t much better to be honest.  I found that the trimmer itself is quite bulky and heavy.  I can’t really hold onto it comfortably for too long.  I do like that it is corded because I don’t have to worry about the trimmer running out of charge, although the new one still does have an over heating problem.

Because of the Black & Decker GH1000’s power, it is great for using for edging, it can even be used on paving slabs and you wont do any damage to the trimmer.  The only thing is that because it is so powerful, I find that it is quite dangerous.  I got a little too close to my fence panel and ended up making a hole in it with the trimmer.  It only took about 3 seconds.  I wouldn’t recommend using this trimmer if your children are playing out and make sure that you concentrate, and keep your legs out of the way!

For me, owning a string trimmer with a cord is like having a useless extra limb.  I am always pulling too much on the cord, and forcing it out of the wall, which has even in the past detached the plug from the cord, or else I’m even cutting through the cord with the string on the trimmer, which just isn’t ideal as there’s only two options – get a new trimmer or make some attempt at fixing it.  One choice costs a fortune; the other could cost you your life.

After I had broken yet another corded trimmer, I decided to try a battery powered one and after searching around for a good price, and following the in store advice, I purchased a WORX GT WG151 cordless string trimmer.  I had considered buying a gas trimmer, but they are considerably more expensive, and my budget couldn’t stretch that far, and I wasn’t too keen on the thought of having to keep gas and oil in my outhouse.  The WORX GT WG151 runs on battery power, which seems to me to be one of the safer means to power a trimmer.

I had initially been concerned that the WORX GT WG151 trimmer wouldn’t be powerful enough for the jobs that I had lined up for it.  I had always convinced myself that a corded trimmer was receiving 100% power, 100% of the time, whilst a battery couldn’t provide anywhere near the type of power or perform to the best of its ability all the time.  I don’t actually have that big of a garden, so I was quite happy that I could get the entire trimming done that I needed to on just one battery charge.  I dislike having to leave a job so being able to finish it all is a great bonus for me, and put my mind at ease when it comes to the life of the battery.  Another positive point for this trimmer is that it seems to be just as powerful as my old corded ones.  It can cut through most of the things I need it to.

It isn’t so bad to hold onto either.  Battery packs for these trimmers can often be quite heavy, due to the amount of battery fluid in them, but this trimmer itself is very light, so adding the battery to it doesn’t make a whole lot of inconvenience to the user.  I didn’t feel that I was aching after trimming the entire garden at all.

I wouldn’t recommend this trimmer if you have a large garden.  You will have to keep charging the battery and that can get really frustrating.  For average sized gardens and simple gardening needs, the WORX GT WG151 string trimmer is a good choice.
